About the program

The Master of Arts in Applied Sociology is an advanced academic program that prepares highly skilled professionals to understand, analyze, and develop sustainable solutions to contemporary social challenges. The program emphasizes using sociological tools and methodologies to analyze social phenomena in various contexts, focusing on issues affecting individuals and communities locally and globally.

This program bridges theoretical knowledge and practical experience, training students to apply theoretical frameworks to address real-world issues. It also aims to enhance critical thinking, foster creativity in problem-solving, and promote teamwork with diverse societal groups.

 

Objectives of the Program

  1. Provide a comprehensive understanding of social sciences and their applications to enhance awareness of the connections between social phenomena and cultural, economic, and political contexts.
  2. Develop advanced research capabilities by training students to design and implement studies using quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
  3. Address pressing social issues by studying poverty, unemployment, social inequality, and migration and offering data-driven practical solutions.
  4. Build professional skills necessary for work in various sectors, including education, healthcare, public policy, and development.
  5. Promote sustainable development through strategies based on applied sociology that support social justice and empower vulnerable groups.
  6. Strengthen scientific research in public policies by preparing studies and reports that inform decision-making through analytical insights.

Admission Requirements

A Bachelor's degree in Applied Sociology or an equivalent qualification, approved by the UAE- MoHESR.

 

Additional Requirements:

  • Applicants whose Bachelor's degree does not align with the required specialization must complete up to 3 remedial courses (3 CR.H. each determined by the department/college on a case-by-case basis based on the applicant's prior degree. These remedial courses are taken outside the curriculum and do not contribute to the cumulative GPA. Specialized courses cannot be taken concurrently with remedial courses. If the applicant has already completed (or holds an equivalent to) any of the remedial courses at the Bachelor's level, they will be exempt from that course. Each exemption allows the applicant to enroll in a specialized course from the designated postgraduate program, which can be completed alongside the remaining remedial courses (up to three).
  • Applicants who do not meet the required English proficiency score must enroll in a remedial English course (3 CR.H., pass/fail), which is taken outside the academic plan and does not contribute to the cumulative GPA.
  • Applicants whose native language is English or who have completed a Bachelor's degree with English as the medium of instruction are exempt from the English proficiency requirement.

Graduation Requirements

To obtain a Master of Arts in Applied Sociology, the student must successfully complete 33 credit hours, with a minimum (CGPA) of 3 out of 4.
