I remember my university days with great pride, from interacting with professors to the spirit of cooperation among students. It was a journey full of challenges, learning, and ambition building.
During my studies, I also experienced the COVID-19 pandemic, which was a major turning point in education. The shift to distance learning was a significant transformation that improved the experience of both teachers and students, and strengthened our skills in using modern technology and digital learning methods.
As always, the UAE becomes stronger after every challenge, and this was also reflected in Al Ain University, which returned with a modern vision that matches today’s educational needs. I chose my major because of my passion for education and my desire to make a positive impact on future generations. It was also a natural continuation of my diploma studies, which deepened my understanding of the educational field and strengthened my commitment to it.
It is also part of my family legacy, as my mother was an educator and school principal. She was my role model and inspired me to love education and believe in its role in building individuals and society.
My future ambitions include expanding in smart curriculum development, empowering teachers with artificial intelligence tools, and contributing to building innovative and sustainable learning environments.

What are the main challenges in your current position?
One of the main challenges is keeping up with the rapid development of educational technology and the different levels of digital readiness among teachers and learners. Another challenge is balancing educational authenticity with modern innovation requirements.
What is the role of a graduate towards the university and society?
The role of a graduate toward the university is to be an ambassador in the field, representing its values and outcomes. In society, the graduate contributes to knowledge development, spreading awareness, and building generations capable of facing challenges.

Profile
Ms. Lubna Salah Al-Din Musa Afana currently serves as the Acting Head of the National Curriculum Department at Emirates National Schools. She brings over twenty-eight years of experience in the field of education, working within international schools and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs. She is also a specialized literacy trainer, focusing on teacher training and the development of effective teaching strategies and methodologies.
She dedicates her efforts to developing and modernizing national curricula to align with the skills required in the modern era. She also supports classroom practices by empowering teachers and equipping them with modern instructional approaches that enhance thinking skills, language proficiency, and national identity, while aligning with the requirements of digital transformation in education.
Her work is based on a clear methodology that focuses on curriculum quality and effective classroom implementation, with continuous follow-up aimed at improving the efficiency of the educational process and achieving a tangible impact on student learning. Her educational vision also connects national curriculum development with the use of artificial intelligence as a supportive tool to improve the quality of education, ensuring high-quality and sustainable learning that meets future demands.
Academic Journey
Her academic journey began with a Diploma from the Community College in Jordan, which marked the first step in strengthening her connection to education and deepening her desire to pursue knowledge.
Driven by her passion for Arabic language and educational sciences, she joined Al Ain University to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Education specializing in Arabic Language and Islamic Education Teacher Preparation, graduating with distinction. This stage represented a major turning point in shaping her educational awareness and professional direction.
Believing that professional growth begins with continuous learning, she continued her graduate studies at Al Ain University, earning a Master’s degree in Arabic Language Curricula and Teaching Methods, also with distinction.

Her thesis, titled “The Effect of a Teaching Strategy Based on Reception Theory on Improving Interpretive Reading Skills and Developing Self-Concept among Cycle Three Students in Abu Dhabi Emirate Schools,” allowed her to explore deeply the challenges of Arabic language education and reading comprehension development among students. Through this research, she investigated innovative teaching strategies that encourage students to actively engage with texts, inspiring them to see reading as a creative and interactive process that enables learners to become conscious producers of meaning rather than passive recipients of text.
Al Ain University and Its Academic Impact
For Ms. Afana, Al Ain University was more than an educational institution; it was a place of formation and growth. Within its academic environment, her passion developed, her skills expanded, and a strong knowledge foundation was established—one that continues to support her professional success today.
She expresses deep gratitude to the administrative and academic staff for their sincere support and guidance. She also extends special thanks to Dr. Suad Abdul Karim Al-Waeli for her continuous support and valuable guidance, which played a significant role in helping her and her colleagues pursue their academic paths with confidence and excellence.
Professional Journey and Career Development
Ms. Afana began her career in education over twenty-eight years ago. Throughout this journey, she progressed through several educational roles that strengthened her teaching and supervisory skills and provided extensive experience within the school community.
She initially worked as a teacher of Arabic language and Islamic education, where she gained valuable experience in lesson planning, teaching, and improving student performance.
As her experience grew and her passion for improving education expanded, she obtained certification as an Accredited Literacy Trainer, which enabled her to move to the central administration as a Literacy Trainer. In this role, she delivered specialized training workshops for teachers, participated in evaluating and improving classroom practices, and contributed to building a supportive learning environment that enhances the quality of language education and continuous professional development in schools.
Later, she assumed greater responsibilities and was appointed Acting Head of the National Curriculum Department at Emirates National Schools. In this role, she oversees national curriculum development, quality assurance in education, and school readiness for achieving “Outstanding” ratings in external inspections. She also leads the development of centralized examinations and ensures their alignment with national standards. Additionally, she represents the department in national and international conferences, exhibitions, and competitions, further strengthening her leadership vision and ability to guide educational teams toward sustainable institutional development.

Reason for Choosing the Specialization and Future Aspirations
Ms. Afana chose Arabic language and Islamic studies out of a firm belief that language and identity are the foundation of building individuals and societies. Strengthening language skills and deepening identity values, she believes, are essential for developing aware, creative, and thoughtful generations.
Her experience in international schools and IB programs reinforced her conviction that improving education requires specialized knowledge in curriculum development and teaching quality. This motivated her to pursue her Master’s degree in Arabic language curricula and teaching methods, a decision that met a genuine professional need and allowed her to deepen her pedagogical knowledge.
Her future ambition is to continue developing innovative national Arabic curricula aligned with global standards while meeting the needs of Emirati students. She also aims to continue her academic and research work as a trainer and expert in curriculum development, contributing to sustainable and impactful educational advancement.
The Role of Graduate Studies in Her Career
Her master’s specialization represented a true turning point in her professional journey. It provided her with deep research and analytical tools that enabled her to better understand curricula, analyze them, and design effective teaching strategies.
This academic preparation helped her transition from the role of teacher and trainer to educational leader, capable of supervising curriculum development, improving educational practices, and leading large-scale educational initiatives across schools. As such, this specialization became one of the most significant professional decisions supporting her career advancement.
Community and Volunteer Engagement
Throughout her career, Ms. Afana has participated in numerous voluntary initiatives serving the educational community and supporting both teachers and students.
She has delivered external professional workshops for teachers across schools in the UAE, promoting knowledge exchange and improving educational practices. She has also served as a judge in national identity and academic competitions, supporting student talent and strengthening values of belonging and excellence.

Additionally, she has actively encouraged teachers to participate in national educational awards, such as the Khalifa Educational Award and the Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Distinguished Academic Performance, helping them prepare professional evidence and documentation to enhance their chances of success. Many of them have achieved advanced positions.
She also places strong emphasis on motivating students across school branches to participate in national and international competitions, where many have achieved first-place rankings, reflecting a leadership approach focused on producing measurable and sustainable impact.
The Graduate’s Role Toward University and Society
Ms. Afana believes that a graduate’s role extends beyond graduation, as every graduate represents their university in their professional journey.
